Artist: Mary Cassatt. The studio for this weeks reflects the big idea (relationships) because these stamps/impressions have different layers to them which shows the relationship that a person has with someone, family, culture, etc. My impression shows the relationship I have with myself and my culture. I have "K's" around the border because that represents my name (Kathleen). I put it around the border because at first that is what people see me as (my name) but on the smaller portion I have the Greek key stamped because that is big part of who I am. So when people get to know me on a deeper level, they will know that I am Greek Orthodox, so this shows the relationship of me with my culture. This idea can be represented in the classroom because each child can make a stamp of something that shows what they have a relationship with. The kids can be put into groups and we can do a gallery walk and look at what the kids picked that they have a relationship. We can integrate this writing and the kids can do an activity of why they chose these items to represent the relationship.
Artist: Do Ho Suh. This studio is related to the big idea (relationships) because the artist (Suh) depicts peoples' homes in different ways, yet they are still represented. He brings up the concept of space and how many different ways you can incorporate space in any idea. This studio reflects relationships because it shows that each have a relationship of where we are from and where we grew up. My pop out represents my home because I have a red brick base with trees, flowers and bushes surrounding it. Even though I moved when I was young, this house has been my home for 15 years and it will always be home to me. Each children can represent their home in a pop up and explain how they decided why what they make represents their home. This is can then be taken further to show that everyone comes from different place and my home may not necessarily look like your home so integrated with social studies/social justice.
